Newcastle
If they somehow blow up and finish outside top 4, would Europa league qualification represent a sucsessful season for them?

If they lose tonight, the pressure on their last couple of games will be huge.

Remember last season, when Patrick Vieira took over mid table Palace, who were in PROFIT during Woy's tenure, spent unprecedented money for them, and finished... Mid table, yet was among the manager of the year contenders.

Not only do you have to laugh, but you really have to wonder why.

Eddie Howe manager of the season for me, considering the careful spending and high expectations

My pick is for Big Fat Sam Allardyce for conning a half a million cheque from the Leeds boardroom and getting fucking nowhere with it.

He's up there with Klopp and Pep apparently

He has done a good job given where he started but think his best thing is the steady pace they have done it at.
Not sure what he has spent all together but its not massive individual amounts but he has upped the level with the likes of Bruno G & Isak and he has IMPROVED others.

The next step to challenge at the top is to bring in the next level of player ... competing with the Manchester clubs, Liverpool etc

I still have Gary O'NEIL as Manager of the year & the droopy eyed fellow at Forest behind Howe in third

Re: Newcastle
I admit I underestimated Howe when he joined Toon...

Has quietly fixed their defensive problems and got them to top 4...

Yes...had lots of cash bit has spent it wisely...

Positive approach to tactics and squad management has paid off...

"Eddie Howe is my pick for EPL manager of the season"

Yes maybe, decent enough manager at a money no object club, however mine would be Unai Emery for turning the same Villa squad from relegation battlers into Europa League Contenders. That has taken some doing.

Re: Newcastle
Like Arsenal, they've benefitted from Liverpool and Chelsea having sub par seasons, Man U being inconsistent and spurs comically imploding.

So i agree- it'll likely be much tougher for them next time round assuming the other clubs get their shit together. But with all their resource they will sooner or late crack that group and surpass at least Arsenal and spurs, if not all the teams aside from Man City eventually.

Re: Newcastle
They’re still fundamentally a team containing Fabian SCHAR, Dan BURN, Sean LONGSTAFF, JOELINTON, Joe WILLOCK, Jacob MURPHY, Miguel ALMIRON & others… no one would have taken a single one of those in January 2022.
Pretty incredible what they’ve achieved – and they have bought well – but they’re punching well above their weight and can’t see it happening again unless they have a spectacular summer. On paper, they’re still a long way off the teams who normally make up the top 5

Re: Newcastle
They have spent wisely and qualified for CL. I reckon they will spend big this summer which could be a danger as might attract big names that won't jell.

Had hoped they would get rid of Howe as he isn't a big enough name and then implode but that is looking unlikely now... think they have actually handled the transition to money bags very well.

If Rice is going to go would rather he went to them than Arsenal.

Re: Newcastle
Even with their wealth. They won’t be as good next season. Like Arsenal they will be playing twice a week. And haven’t got the squad to cope. Plus the likes of the Rent Boys and Red Scouse will be better.

Re: Newcastle
I doubt their long term plan at the start of the season was champions league qualification this season. If you'd offered them fifth and a cup final at the beginning they'd more than happily have taken it.

After the season they've had it would feel disappointing for them to miss out. And realistically next season Liverpool and Chelsea will come back stronger (and possibly Spurs) so the battle for top four is going to be a lot tougher.

Their new found wealth will add them to the pool of clubs that will never go down again. Meaning that's one more club that won't be worse than us when we have another shakey season.

Re: Newcastle
dealcanvey, it's quite possible that Newcastle won't make the top 4 next year. Hell, maybe Man City won't either. You never know. But what you said was that you "dont think Newcastle will get as good a chance as this to finish in the top 4", as if their time has been and gone, instead of just beginning. Personally I think it's far more likely that Liverpool and Arsenal will drop out of the running for top 4 places over the next few years than for Newcastle to never get there.

Nagel

They can only spend as much as FFP will allow.

There are already a number of clubs in the PL whose owners have more money than they can spend. They have just joined the list.

Chelsea have managed to spend 500 million this year alone and look at them.

Currently looks like they are wobbling but if they do manage to get top 4 no guarantee it is going to become a regular occurrence. No way will Chelsea and Liverpool
be as bad as they were this year plus Man United and Arsenal will spend big.

I dont think they will finish top 4 next season.

Considering where they've been for the last 10 years i would suggest Europa League would be an absolutely fucking immense season for them.

Manuel 11:30 Thu May 18
Re: Newcastle
They will finish top 4, Liverpool are finishing like a train but have left it too late. Top 4 will put them ''ahead of schedule'' One downside is if they don't do it again next season the cynical view would be that they have gone backwards.
